Gnomes of the Fairy Garden

Short Story I

Within the grassy plains of Fairy Garden lies a small settlement of gnomes, known as the Puny Gnomes. This group of gnomes live in a patch of pumpkins and have named their village Pumpkin Grove. However, the village is constantly under threat by the giant raven, Smackatus the Terror, who guards the mountain pass just to the west of the village. Numerous battles against Smackatus the Terror occurring throughout the years have resulted in large losses for the gnomes and have consequently brought the gnome village to crumble. Now, after the many years of the gnome village in ruin the gnomes have finally begun to slowly rebuild with what little they have left.

Within Pumpkin Grove, the only gnomes still living are the children and the elders. The adults of the village have all died trying to protect the village from the ongoing war with Smackatus. Glarbles, one of the many children orphaned by Smackatus the Terror, seeks revenge on the one who took his parents away from him when he was just a mere babe. With no adults able to fight, the elders of the village have taken control of order and have left the children to do all the labor. The mayor of Pumpkin Grove, Mayor Thumper, rules harshly over the gnomes and knows no mercy for incompetence. Under the mayor’s tyranny, the gnomes have begun a slow progression of rebuilding their community but not without the consequence of forcing the children to do the adults bidding. As a result, the children are forced into inhuman-like conditions all for the betterment of the village. Henceforth, Glarbles has become the voice of the children as he and many of them work in the local pumpkin factory and farm. It was time for the gnome children to rise up and overthrow the elders of the gnome village and Glarbles was going to lead this uprising.

The upcoming attack of Smackatus the Terror was looming. Preparations for the battle were underway. A training ground was set up for the children to learn and train how to fight against enemies since the elders were too old to fight. However, the training grounds were not only meant for sparring. Glarbles and his league of followers would hold secret meetings and campaigns aimed at strategizing to overthrow Mayor Thumper and the elders. By using battle preparations for Smackatus as a cover the children were ready for the real fight – taking down Mayor Thumper. No one could stop the wrath of the children and no elder could predict this turn of events of the children uniting as a force to be reckoned with. Mayor Thumper was no longer safe in his luxury house. A new age was upon the Puny gnomes.

As dawn began, with Glarbles as the leader, a team of children set out for Mayor Thumper’s pumpkin estate. Their goal – to assassinate the mayor. The children could no longer stand for the cruelty that the mayor inflicted upon them. It was time for the children to inflict cruelty onto the mayor and to any elder that stood in their way. The children’s choice of weapon: fire. Fire to the gnomes was a deadly element of nature. No gnome can withstand the brutality of fire. At the command of Glarbles the children poured gasoline around the perimeter of the estate, soaking everything in gasoline and leaving no opening for a chance of escape. With an arsenal of molotov cocktails at the ready the children threw dozens of the ready made bombs at Mayor Thumper’s house. Instantaneously, the pumpkin estate went up in flames. To Glarbles and his team watching the pumpkin house burn to ash was a glorious endeavor, however for the elders of the village it was a bad omen.

Coming back from the expedition, the children celebrated in victory believing they had taken down the mayor in a blaze of glory. Just as the children were throwing a celebration party news quickly reached them that Mayor Thumper was not at his house during the assassination attempt but instead was having a slumber party at his neighbors. This unpredictable turn of events only temporarily delayed Mayor Thumper’s death. However, even though the assassination attempt was a failure, the mission was not a complete loss. The unexplainable fire to Mayor Thumper’s house put the elders in disarray as they were uncertain about what this could mean to the gnomes. Glarbles and the children used the elder’s uncertainty to their advantage to finally take down the hierarchy of elders. The plan that Glarbles came up with was so brilliant and masterful that no one, not even his league of children could comprehend how Glarbles thought of such a thing – ignore the elders.

With this new idea of not listening to the elders any more the children were on their way to success. With the elders no longer dictating the village the children were now finally on top. The elders were now at the bottom of the barrel. It was a new age of Glarbles and his league of children ruling the gnome village. Now it was time for the children to get serious. By dismantling Mayor Thumper’s reign, the children could now focus on the air threat of Smackatus the Terror.

In order to safely sneak to the raven, efforts to find the secret passage in the mountain pass to reach Smackutus have been successful. The children were now able to launch a full scale attack on Smackatus. A squad of the best children fighters were to be sent, for once and for all, to exterminate Smackutus the Terror. Glarbles and the children were finally making progress that the elders could never have dreamed of. The gnomes were now an enemy to be reckoned with and no one could stop them from reigning.

While a squadron of children were to deal with the raven, other groups of children were tasked with finding resources to strengthen the gnome village. As a group of children moved to the west of the river they passed by the friendly golem, Golby the Friendly, who mysteriously arrived at the river early in the spring. As the children passed by the golem, they came upon a massive crater shape at the beginning of the forest. This crater somehow had caused the trees in the forest to sprout colorful berries on their limbs. The crater was also filled with plenty of outer-space ore. This expedition was proven as a success and with this find nothing could stop the gnomes from their era of terror.

Although the gnomes were thriving not everyone was happy about it. Even though the friendly golem Golby had been around the gnomes for quite some time now, Golby was tired of watching the mayhem in Pumpkin Grove. Globy was not particularly fond of the gnomes to begin with and with the rising violence happening Golby did not want to watch any more. It was time for the friendly golem to leave and search for a new spot to spend his days. As soon as the golem planned for his departure a small visitor approached him – Burgundy the gnome. Burgundy was one of the older gnomes of the village who decided to flee once she saw the coup happening. She may have contributed to the elder’s tyranny but she was never a tyrant. So once Burgundy realized what was happening she went to her good friend Golby and decided to join him on his quest to find a new location to settle.

With the story coming to an end, the Fairy Gardens have become a place of chaos and attempted murder. The gnomes started in ruins and have in turn ended in a place of anarchy and child dictatorship. The horror that lies beyond the river, hunkered at the mountain pass, Smackutus the Terror could never have guessed the change in the gnome village as well as the soon to be sneak attack on him. The terrors he used to inflict upon the land will soon come to an end. Below the mountain to the west of the river now lies a massive imprint of where the friendly golem used to sit and watch over the grass plains and forest. The magical place of the Fairy Gardens, no longer.
